RESEARCH Analyzing Magazine Feature Articles

Analyzing Magazine Feature Articles

Q Magazine article of Lady Gaga -

  • The layout brakes normal conventions.
  • one page filled with picture of the artist mentioned in the article.
  • one page filled with solid text and information. With a small title of the artists name in the top right corner and a large translucent "L" in the center of the page with links to the artists name as well.
  • To link with the colour scheme of the magazine in question and to make sure the page doesn't lack colour the "L" in the center of the page is red. This bright contrasting red colour leads the readers eye away from the picture and brings the attention more towards the interview. A connotation of the large red "L" is Lady Gaga's personality and how big and bold it is, also the fact that the "L" is red relating to her sexuality shown in the picture on the page on the left and in the picture on the front cover.
  •  The text layout is in columns to stay with conventions and to prevent the reader being bombard by text.
  • To show a start to a new paragraph or topic in the interview article, the first letter of the paragraph is bold and enlarged to make it clear to the reader, and to separate the large columns of text.
  • On the bottom right hand corner of the right page there is the magazines masthead to remind the reader which magazine they are reading as well as the page number.
  •  The black and white of the picture on the left of the article could be a connotation of Lady Gaga's simple elegance behind her sexuality and could be linked to someone like Marilyn Monroe.
  • This article and picture show the rising of Lady Gaga and her style. Showing the reader her personality through her fashion choice and showing the reader what kind of music she may have to offer the reader. Lady Gaga is being shown in the cover and the article that she is quite a confident outlandish character and is quite sexuality and open with her appearance and body.

NME Magazine article of Lily Allen -

  •  The headline of the article is a quote "people think I'm an attention seeker, but I'm just honest" from the articles interview with Lily, this doubles up as a text grab.
  • Text font resembles black and white colored cut outs from a news paper which grabs the readers eye and draws it first to the headline and then to the picture of Lily herself, to see her posture showing her attitude towards this article and interview. The uses of the news paper letters could also be a connotation of Lily's personality and style of music. This could also be interpreted as a secretive article and links with the stereotypical criminal letter font to hide the persons hand writing.
  • The image of the artist dominates the double page spread which is conventional for a music magazine.
  • The article layout is in columns, following a conventional layout, this article has squished their article into 4 instead of the traditional 2 or 3 because of the large font choice for the headline.
  • Underneath the headline of the interview is anchorage, a piece of text that explains the interview before the reader or the image.
  • The red, white and black colour scheme links with the magazines style and theme which reminds the reader which magazine they are reading the information from.
  • There is not a lot of white space free in this feature article which is unusual for a feature article because they usually are white space heavy.

Analysis

Products in central image look of good quality and high expense. This links nicely with the age of the readers and their income. In the image the room is quite big suggesting that the reader will be the owner of a large house. Quite female colours in font and image. Simple text with a non simple image to make reader want to see more products inside magazine.

Demographic- Vogue

Analysis

Middle aged actress on front cover appeals to a middle aged reader. using the colour red helps to emphasize a sexual confident lady, which the actress is but the reader can relate with. Text heavy giving lots of information to draw reader into the continence more.

Demographic -Q

Analysis

This cover defiantly appeals to a rock genre themed audience as in the the central image Cheryl is portraying a very rock chick look (bad girl) which people of this age group would like. Also people of this age group would like that Cheryl is on the front cover as she is very much the readers generation and they would know and want to be like her. Making Cheryl look sexy and naughty fits very well with the genre of music but also with her own look which works very well in her favor.
